One of the main endeavors of the program is to develop the research skills of students by offering solid training in methodology.

Entry requirements for the 1-year MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology

For general CEU PU entry requirements, see the CEU PU Admissions Policy in Annex 1.2.2. University entry requirements are:

· Applicants must have a first degree from a recognized university or institution of higher education. Admission to the one-year MA program requires at least 4 years of prior university studies.
· Students enrolled in a master's program at CEU PU must not be simultaneously enrolled in another higher education institution
· English proficiency (for minimum test scores, see the CEU PU Admissions Policy in Annex 1.2.2).

- Departmental entry requirements are:

· A 500-word research proposal. The topic should fall within the broad thematic focus of the department and the areas of interest of its faculty.

  • the research proposal (3 pages or less,1.5 spaced, not including bibliography) elaborating on the main research questions and historical context; describing the research, the approach and the methods considered; and placing the topic in the context of previous research in the field (in-text references)
  • a short  bibliography (one page or less) of works cited in the proposal.

· 2 recommendation letters
· A writing sample. The writing sample should be a 1500-2000 words long sample of academic writing. This can be (part of) a course essay, or a chapter of a thesis that you produced while studying for your first degree, and it should be in English. Certainly, it can be a current piece written specifically to meet the requirements of the Department as well.

Please note that we only conduct interviews for shortlisted PhD applicants. The department may want to do this by phone, skype or in person. MA applicants are usually not interviewed.

For information on financial aid policy for MA applicants, please visit CEU’s policy on financial aid. Questions regarding university-level financial aid policies can be directed to the financial aid office.

In exceptional cases, applicants with a three-year bachelor’s degree may be allowed admission into one-year master’s programs. The applicants should be aware that they may not be able to pursue a doctoral degree in the European Higher Education Area if they have accumulated less than 300 ECTS credits in their prior university studies. Applicants wishing to pursue an academic career should choose their master’s program accordingly (two-year master’s in case they completed a three-year bachelor’s degree, and one-year master’s in case they completed a four-year bachelor’s degree). For the list of conditions under which exemptions may be granted, please refer to the program’s website.
